Annual Senior Amateur Golf Classic results from May 16
The annual Senior Amateur Golf Classic released its results from Wednesday, May 16 at Newport News Golf Club at Deer Run.
Skill awards for the Deer Run course were given to Newport News residents Mike Ancel for closest to pin at the 16th hole and to John Clements for closest to pin at the eighth hole. Hampton resident Danny Hilling took home awards for longest drive at the 13th hole and straightest drive at the 18th hole, while Hampton resident C.H. Smith took home the award for longest drive at the sixth hole.
On the Cardinal course, skill awards went to Newport News resident Cary Nettles for longest rive at the second hole. Hampton resident Pat Cooper took home awards both for closest to pin at the seventh hole and longest drive at the 10th hole. Gloucester Point resident Wanda Marinke took the closest to pin award for the 18th hole, and Cobbs Creek resident Sharon Miller won straightest drive at the 16th hole.
First-place score awards in the Men 50-59 division in the first flight were given to Hampton resident Danny Hilling and Poquoson resident Steve Widden for their scores of 63. Second place went to C.H. Smith and Willie Smith, a father and son team, for their score of 63. Third place went to Williamsburg residents Jeff Fleishman and Steve Griggs for their score of 64.
In first flight of the Men 60-69 division, first place went to Hampton resident Don McMahon and Newport News resident Frank Yarborough for their score of 65. Second place went to Virginia Beach residents John Hicks and Dick Colvin for their score of 65, and third place went to Newport News resident Nelson Betts and Gloucester resident Wayne Jackson with their score of 66.
In the first flight of the Men 70+ division, first place went to Poquoson resident Bob Lewis and Hampton resident Bill Oblein for their score of 66. Second place went to Newport News resident Roy Nickerson and Yorktown resident Chuck Wise for their score of 67, while third place went to Newport News resident Arthur Manley and Hampton resident Walter Washington for their score of 68.
First-place score awards in the Men 50-59 division in the second flight were given to Newport News resident Gene Thornton and Williamsburg resident Don Bishard for their score of 75. Second place went to Hampton resident Joe Clark and Yorktown resident Dave Robinson for their score of 75. Third place went to Hampton resident Darrell Bergeron and Carrollton resident George Bradby for their score of 76.
In second flight of the Men 60-69 division, first place went to Yorktown resident Robert Askew and Williamsburg resident James Royal for their score of 72. Second place went to Newport News resident Tee Robinson and Hampton resident Ben Henson for their score of 72. Third place went to Newport News resident Glenn Moschler and Yorktown resident Jim Weston for their score of 72.
In the second flight of the Men 70+ division, first place went to Newport News resident Fred Dodson and Hampton resident Chester Weaver for their score of 78. Second place went to Hampton residents Vann McDonald and Lawrence Weaver with their score of 79. Third place went to Hampton resident Aaron Hamrick and Yorktown resident Lenny Keefe with their score of 79.
On the Cardinal course, women and mixed teams in the 50-64 division awarded first place to Hampton resident Pat Cooper and Yorktown resident Jan Keenan with their score of 72. Second place went to Gloucester Point residents Wanda and John Marinke with their score of 74. Third place went to Newport News residents Sharron K. Miller and Okie Rupnow with their score of 75.
Women and mixed teams in the 65+ division awarded first place to Gwynn residents Cricket Call and Lindy Hatch for their score of 78. Second place went to Newport News resident Carol Bushong and Yorktown resident Jim Keenan for their score of 78. Third place went to Yorktown residents Carolyn and Don Felling with their score of 80.
